# Quick start (/docs/quick-start)

Launch the overlay, find settings and choose the display backend.

## Live mode [#live-mode]

1. Start Counter-Strike 2.
2. Start the overlay:

   ```bash
   sudo ./build/chudcs2
   ```

3. Focus the settings window. Press `Ctrl+F` or `Ctrl+K` to search for a feature.
4. Configure the features you need and save a profile in **Config**. See [Settings menu](/docs/guides/settings-menu) and [Keybinds](/docs/guides/keybinds).

The reader attempts to refresh offsets on startup. To refresh them separately without opening the overlay:

```bash
sudo ./build/chudcs2 --update-offsets
```

Use `--validate-config` to check `default.json`, or the file selected through `CHUDCS2_CONFIG`, without opening the overlay:

```bash
./build/chudcs2 --validate-config
```

Pass a file path after the flag to validate a different profile. See [Configuration](/docs/concepts/configuration) for profile locations.

## Display backend [#display-backend]

The overlay selects native Wayland layer-shell in a Wayland session. Force X11/XWayland when the compositor does not support layer-shell:

```bash
sudo ./build/chudcs2 --x11
```

The current executable reads the live CS2 process. It does not implement the former shared-memory simulation mode. See [Packet layout](/docs/reference/shared-memory) for the retained internal data types.

## Hyprland [#hyprland]

For X11/XWayland placement, enable **Hyprland Compatibility Mode** in Debug and follow [Hyprland setup](/docs/guides/hyprland). Native Wayland layer surfaces use separate compositor rules.
